Choice(选择)

John is the kind of guy you love to hate. He is always in a good mood and always has something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, "If I were any better, I would be twins!"
约翰是个让你感觉爱恨交织的人。他永远都有个开朗的心情,话语间也保持着正面思维。每当有人问他如何啦?他会回答,“今天很好,但明天会更好。”

He was a natural motivator. If an employee was having a bad day, John was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.
他是位很自然的激励者,如遇到有雇员心情不好时,他总会前去开解并告诉他们如何往好的角度看事物。

Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up and asked him, "I don't get it!

You can't be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?"
He replied, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or .. you can choose to be in a bad mood. I choose to be in a good mood."

Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or... I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it.

Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or... I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life. "Yeah, right, it's not that easy", I protested.
每当有人前来向我抱怨时,我可以选择接受他们抱怨或。。。我能为其点出生活上正面的方向,我选择正面的方向。“是的,没错,但并不容易呀!”我抗议说。

"Yes, it is," he said. "Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people affect your mood.

You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It's your choice how you live your life."

I reflected on what he said. Soon hereafter, I left the Tower Industry to start my own business. We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.

Several years later, I heard that he was involved in a serious accident, falling some 60 feet from a communications tower.

After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, he was released from the hospital with rods placed in his back.

I saw him about six months after the accident. When I asked him how he was, he replied, "If I were any better, I'd be twins. Wanna see my scars?" I declined to see his wounds, but I did ask him what had gone through his mind as the accident took place.

"What did you do?" I asked.

"Well, there was a big burly nurse shouting questions at me," said John. "She asked if I was allergic to anything. 'Yes, I replied.' The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, 'Gravity.'"

Over their laughter, I told them, "I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead."

He lived, thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude... I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully. Attitude, after all, is everything.

Every company faces the problem of people leaving the company for better pay or profile.
每家公司都面对员工因更好的待遇或发展机会而离开。

Early this year, Mark, a senior software designer, got an offer from a prestigious international firm to work in its India operations developing specialized software. He was thrilled by the offer.
今年初,麦克,一位资深的软件设计师,获得了一家国际知名企业之雇用为其在印度的分公司开发专业软件,他对此感到非常的兴奋。

He had heard a lot about the CEO. The salary was great. The company had all the right systems in place employee-friendly human resources (HR) policies, a spanking new office, and the very best technology, even a canteen that served superb food.

Twice Mark was sent abroad for training. "My learning curve is the sharpest it's ever been," he said soon after he joined.

Last week, less than eight months after he joined, Mark walked out of the job.

Why did this talented employee leave? Mark quit for the same reason that drives many good people away.

The answer lies in one of the largest studies undertaken by the Gallup Organization. The study surveyed over a million employees and 80,000 managers and was published in a book called "First Break All The Rules". It came up with this surprising finding:

If you're losing good people, look to their immediate boss. Immediate boss is the reason people stay and thrive in an organization; and he's the reason why people leave. When people leave they take knowledge, experience and contacts with them, straight to the competition.

"People leave managers not companies," write the authors Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman.

Mostly manager drives people away? HR experts say that of all the abuses, employees find humiliation the most intolerable:
– The first time, an employee may not leave, but a thought has been planted.
– The second time, that thought gets strengthened.
– The third time, he looks for another job.

When people cannot retort openly in anger, they do so by passive aggression. By digging their heels in and slowing down. By doing only what they are told to do and no more. By omitting to give the boss crucial information. Dev says: "If you work for a jerk, you basically want to get him into trouble. You don't have your heart and soul in the job."

Different managers can stress out employees in different ways – by being too controlling, too suspicious, too pushy, too critical, but they forget that workers are not fixed assets, they are free agents. When this goes on too long, an employee will quit – often over a trivial issue.

A Chinese man walks into a bank in New York City and asks for the loan officer. He tells the loan officer that he is going to China on business for two weeks and needs to borrow $5,000.
有位华人走进一间位于纽约市的银行并要求会见贷款部经理。他告诉贷款部经理说他要前往中国两周以办理些商务事而需贷款5千美元。

The bank officer tells him that the bank will need some form of security for the loan, so the Chinese man hands over the keys to a new Ferrari parked on the street in front of the bank. He produces the title and everything checks out.
银行贷款部经理告诉他说银行需要些物品以作为抵押,这位华人便即刻把他停泊在银行门前那辆崭新法拉利跑车的钥匙交给银行。接着还提交出所有与车子相关的文件。

The Loan officer agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan. The bank's president and its officers all enjoy a good laugh at the Chinese for using a $250,000 Ferrari as collateral against a $5,000 loan. An employee of the bank then drives the Ferrari into the bank's underground garage and parks it there.
贷款部经理同意接受此车作为有效抵押品并批准其贷款申请。银行经理和其职员都嘲笑此华人以价值25万美元的法拉利跑车为抵押品而只借贷区区的5千美元。之后,银行的职员便把此法拉利跑车驾到银行的地下车库停放好。

Two weeks later, the Chinese returns, repays the $5,000 and the interest, which comes to $15.41.
The loan officer says, 'Sir, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked you out and found that you are a multi-millionaire. What puzzles us is why you would bother to borrow $5,000?'
The Chinese replies: 'Where else in New York City can I park my car for two weeks for only $15.41 and expect it to be there safely when I return.'
两周后,此华人回来并付还所借的5千美元再加上15.41美元的利息。
贷款部经理说:“先生,我们很高兴做成你这笔生意,而且整个交易都进行得非常之顺利,不过我们有点不解。当你不在的那一段时间里,我们曾调查过你的财务并发现你是位亿万富翁。我们所不解的是你为何只借区区的5千美元?”
这位华人回答说:“在整个纽约市那里能找到只需付区区的15.41美元便能让我的车安全的停泊两周,并在我回来时毫发无伤。”
